Used Car Hidden Fees: What Dealers Don't Tell You
The True Out-of-Door Price
The advertised price is rarely what you'll actually pay. Always ask for the "out-the-door" (OTD) price before negotiating.
Documentation Fee
This covers the dealer's paperwork processing — ranging from $50 to $800+ depending on the state. It's often negotiable.
Dealer Add-Ons
Watch for VIN etching, paint protection, fabric protection, and nitrogen in tires. These are marked up 300-500% from actual cost. Say clearly: "I don't want any add-ons."
Advertising Fee
Some dealers charge to cover their own advertising costs. This is rarely legitimate — push back immediately.
Extended Warranty Pressure
Extended warranties are heavily pushed in the finance office. Third-party warranty providers typically offer the same coverage for 30-50% less than dealer plans.
Your Defense
Before the finance office, ask for a complete itemized list of all fees in writing. Cross out anything unrecognized and demand an explanation.
