Pre-Purchase Car Inspection: How to Find the Right Mechanic

Your Best $150 Investment

A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) by an independent mechanic typically costs $100-$200 and can save you from a $5,000-$15,000 mistake.

Finding the Right Mechanic

Use a mechanic with no relationship to the seller. Ask friends for recommendations, check Google Maps reviews, and look for ASE-certified mechanics. Never use the dealer's own service department.

What to Tell the Mechanic

  • Tell them you're considering buying this vehicle and want a complete inspection.
  • Ask them to check the frame for damage or prior repairs.
  • Request a compression test if the car has over 100,000 miles.
  • Ask them to scan for all stored diagnostic codes — even inactive ones.
  • Ask for a written report with specific findings and estimated repair costs.

What If the Seller Refuses?

Walk away immediately. A seller who refuses an independent inspection almost certainly has something to hide.

Using the Report as Leverage

A PPI that reveals necessary repairs is a negotiating tool. Present it and ask for a price reduction equal to the repair cost.
